NSM PSM "Clap Your Brains Off " - Mexican droste music video

This video uses a mathematical formula used by M.C. Escher, in some of his work known as the "Droste Effect." This is my first video clip as a Director, and it was made entirely using a Digital Reflex Camera, the Canon's Mark III, which captures up to 115 continuous pictures at 10 fps.

As this was a really low budget video, it was made possible only thanks to the help of lots and lots of friends. This is the result of almost 6 months of work.

Now Is The Time (Vote '08 remix) - The Crystal Method

Like 38 million other Americans, we were transfixed listening to Obama's acceptance speech at the Democratic National Convention. It reminded us of the creative process we went through all those years ago, listening to samples of inspiring old civil rights speeches and creating the original "Now Is The Time."

We don't often revisit old songs but we've been spending so much time looking forward as we work on our new album it seemed appropriate to take a minute to look back at the beginning. Plus, right now, no American could be hurt by hearing another inspiring message whether it's on the morning news or at the club later that night. This is a song we just want people to hear.

We understand there are many people who have different opinions and political views than we do, and that's fine. As Americans, we feel it is important for all of us to voice our views and encourage others to do the same. That's why on November 4th we implore everybody to vote for the candidates you feel will be best for our country.

We hope you enjoy this mix for what it is... a rocking jam that is meant to inspire you to move. Which way you go is up to you.

Also, we want to thank Shepard Fairey for creating the Obama "Now" image which is based on his iconic Obama "Hope" poster.

Peace and Thanks for Listening,
Scott & Ken

JULY 2008

1. KOMA + BONES - Body Count / The Pipes: Burrito
I'd already made this chart before I heard the new K + B cuts. Shit demanded a re-write. 2 new tracks. Word to the motherfuck! #1

2nd release from the incomparable CF. Complete with French robot voices. Fuck Yes.

Obi Blanche again- thanks to a new fidget remix that is fucking ace. Can’t get enough of this track and the New Judas/ Obi sounds.

“I get, I get, I get, I get. Down!” Zero Cash can do no wrong.

New mixes from Vandal, Electrixx, Charlie Fanclub, and Metalzone (1/2 of Acid Jacks). A serious fucking remix package.

Alcohol, drugs, neon-lights, etc…“Can you feel it?” Rave is king.

Got this as a bootleg. Not sure about an official release. A step away from his usual sound, but the production is stellar as always.

The vox sample is sooo 2004- but in a good way. Full support for Title Fight.

Hard to edge out the original, but Gopher is God, so this is gonna get some play. Fucking serious summer anthem.

This should probably be higher on the chart. A HUGE track, but no big surprise. So, it’s #10.

Sounds like IDC. Fucking NOIZY. It’s always nice to hear some original schit. If you’re new to them, check out “Stomp” (Corsair). Sic.

Cowgum - "Druggggssszzz"

It's pretty fitting that my favorite new drug song comes from my favorite drug city- Amsterdam. But A-dam doesn't make this schit by itself. So the two coolest fuckers from Holland (sorry to Mirik, the goat herder- you're #3) had to get together and form Cowgum.

Cowgum is .5 Richard Cameron (Mr. and Mrs. Cameron, Arling & Cameron, and the super-righteous Fluffy Target) and .5 my main man Joost van Bellen (seriously the coolest motherfucker I know-- a legend). My first Cowgum exposure "Filthy and Raw" has never (not ever) left the record bag, and "Druggggssszzz" is gonna be fixture as well.

Crazy Dutch sex-pot WANNABEASTAR sings the vocal hooks ("I need a big hit!"). Remixing is Brazilian electro scener Edu K, and he gives it a proper Crookers twinge. Sic.

NSM PSM - Clap Your Brains Off (Say Hooo! remix)

Kay of NSM PSM just dropped this rocked out remix of his track "Clap Your Brains Off" onto my desktop. Remix is by our friend in Florianopolis, Brasil - SAY HOOO! - aka Holger Beier of the Berlin-based Bungalaw label and one-half of DJ team and recording artist Le Hamond Inferno.

The New York Times called Florianopolis (Floripa to the locals) "The hippest year round beach scene in South America." I asked Holger to send some photos. Let's hope he obliges.

If you want some more of Mexico City's NSM PSM hit their MySpace page as they've posted some bad-ass mashups - their calling these their RED TRACKS.

DJ Krassy does Hostage

So... I've been keeping this one to myself for a little while... But I've heard Erol has blogged it, so it's best we post it now. It's a mash-up, I guess-- although when the mix goes above and beyond the originals, that label doesn't seem right. Mash-up, re-edit, whatever, it's proper HOSTAGE rave shit melded w/ Digitalism's POGO and it's sultry as fuck. Big fucking high-5s to DJ KRASSY on this edit. Heard Alan Hostage himself was all over it.. So, hopefully he'll get the props he deserves. Check Krassy's MySpace for his on-going BODYROCK mix series (sweet schit). He's local for me (San Diego), so I'm required to give full support. Nobody's twistin' my arm though.

Say Hooo!

Say Hooo! is the brand new moniker for Holger Beier, co-founder of the seminal international club-pop label Bungalow Records out of Berlin as well as one-half of the DJ and recording team Le Hammond Inferno. Holger lives and records now in a lush jungle liar in Florianopolis in Brasil where he starts his day, every day, with a surf and a coconut.

He was in Mexico City where I saw him DJ at the Dunkhouse - yeah Nike has a cool club there with an art gallery and a shoe store right next to the dancefloor. When the first guitar chords of the track below roared out of the PA, I was like - who is this new band I haven't read about in the NME. You'll probably figure out why pretty quickly. Le Hammond Inferno were among the most prolific and proficient mashup artists back in those days.

Holger was in Mexico producing the new Mexican Institute of Sound album, hence his DJ appearance - and he's also finished a new Pat C album. Pat C - Brasilian chanteuse & Holger's wife - pop star in Japan and soon to be everywhere else.

The Say Hoo! MySpace page is so new you can be guaranteed a Top 8 position if you head over there now.

NSM PSM - Mexico City's Got Next

Mexico City is my new favorite place. It's crowded - the second largest city on the planet with 19 million people. The air pollution can get unbelievably bad - the city is built within a basin 2200 meters above sea level so oxygen is already scarce. BUT the people here are so incredibly friendly and open to newcomers. It's always hugs and kisses whenever introductions are made. And the food is sublime - I think I ate nopales tacos (cactus to us gringos) every night. One thing to look out for is that when drinking tequila or mezcal one must calculate the effect of the high altitude if you want to be able to walk home under your own power. And don't ever take the VW Beetle cabs for fear of being kidnapped.

My reason for visiting Mexico is a duo called NSM PSM - that's short-hand for NON STOP MUSIC...PLAY SOME MUSIC. Kay and Pato have been DJ-ing since they were kids - growing up with cassette mixtape culture, early Chicago house and big beat as influences. They're as likely to select Elvis as Daft Punk while performing at all the big indie and dance events in Mexico City.

Kay is also the DJ and performs some vocals with one of the biggest alternative acts in Mexico - Mexican Institute of Sound. More on them in a future blog post, but quickly, MIS are KCRW favorites and are playing at Glastonbury this June.

Pato also owns a store called Beat Box in Puebla outside of Mexico City that carries clothes, sneakers and Kid Robot style toys; while Kaye also produces trailers for Mexican produced films.

"Clap Your Brains Off" will be on their debut EP released in a few months time. They're looking for remix swaps on the track by the way.

NSM PSM's brand new remix of Mexican Institute of Sound's "Para No Vivir Deseperado" is also available below for the first time.

Circuit Freq

Who are Circuit Freq? If you check out their Top Friends on the MySpace page you'd think Circuit Freq are Ancient Keyboards from before the Death of Analog - and not Humans. Since we, as humans, need to have all our spaces filled - a story is needed to satisfy your curiosity as to their identities.

Here goes - Circuit Freq is two Estonian high-school age hackers who mod-ed out their musician Dad's old analog gear and use it to make this insane music. The story continues that they met Felix da Housecat at a rave held on an aging Russian oil tanker floating in the Black Sea off Bulgaria. Upon hearing the Circuit Freq track "Black Chrome" reverberating thru the rusty hull of the ship, Felix insisted upon a copy. And now he's IM-ing the file to all his DJ friends - finally it ends up here on this blog.

OR you could make up your own fable......

A Virgin Tear, JK DJS & Rabbit In The Moon May 10 PHX

Back in 1996 I thought about getting a Sonic The Hedgehog tattoo on my hand. Bad idea. Now I tell people if I WAS to have a tattoo - it would be of an Easter Island statue on my left shoulder. A tiki body ornament would be so cool but I don't think it will ever happen.

If you like your techno DJs mixed with tattoos, piercings, heavy guitars and dark electronica - the 13th Annual Club Tattoo celebration in Tempe, AZ on May 10 is going to be a MUST-SEE experience. Even if you don't have any tattoos or piercings - like myself - the lineup of talent still makes this an event I AM NOT GOING TO MISS.

Some background - Club Tattoo was founded by Sean Dowdell and Linkin Park's Chester Bennington in Phoenix in 1995 and is world renowned in the body art field. They're even opening up a parlor in Vegas - so you can get a tattoo of your honey's name immediately after you get hitched by Elvis. What happens in Vegas stays....on you forever!

Here's your lineup - legendary electronic music pioneers Rabbit In The Moon headlining, the awesome Julien-K opening and a special set of previously unheard songs by Chester Bennington - in my opinion, the most mesmerizing vocalist in rock.

Plus Ty from Virgin Tears (now out on his own under the new moniker A Virgin Tear), the JK DJS (Amir and Brandon of Julien-K) and Jeremy Dawson of Shiny Toy Guns all rocking out on the decks before, during and after.

See you there.
